Beschreibung der Veranstaltung

In February 2022, the security of Europe has been shaken by the Russian invasion into Ukraine. This debate has also entered into the energy sector and the topic of energy security has once again been revived in the political and media discourse. The significant dependence, especially of the Central European region, on the import of Russian energy sources showed the countries’ vulnerability and called for new measures and policies. These discussions are not entirely new, as the region experienced a gas crisis in 2009, which resulted in closer cooperation in the energy sector. However, this time debates on energy security are not centered around a diversification of existing infrastructure, but there is also an accent on climate policies. Unfortunately, very little progress has been made in the Visegrad countries over the past years in this regard despite the efforts to mainstream ambitious climate policy under the European Green Deal.I will focus on the following questions: What are the main differences between these countries in terms of energy and climate policies? What are the main challenges in the energy sector for Visegrad countries? Which approaches are the countries using to tackle climate change?

Veronika Oravcová is a Research Fellow at the Slovak Foreign Policy Association and a Research Assistant at the Department of Political Science at Comenius University in Bratislava. Her research interests are centred on energy transition and energy security in Central and Eastern Europe. She is co-editor of From Economic to Energy Transition. Three Decades of Transitions in Central and Eastern Europe (Palgrave: London, 2021), several chapters on energy transition and several papers on energy policy in Slovakia and the Visegrad countries.
