TIL 110 / online via Zoom

Beschreibung der Veranstaltung

In my talk, I will share insights from psychological research, including my interview studies, related to climate change emotions and climate-related discourses. Emotional experiences related to climate change do include not only perceptions of environmental problems themselves but also perceptions of other social actors, perceptions of power, and politics. They encompass a broad spectrum: fear and anxiety, sadness and grief, helplessness and anger, and denial/disavowal emotions: resentment and avoidance. These emotions are often experienced and mixed and fluctuating but lead to very different social consequences – especially in the conflict–cooperation spectrum. The horrors of climate change lie not only in environmental crises but also in the looming failures of society/humanity to act rationally and cooperate in the face of a possibly ultimate challenge.

Magdalena Budziszewska, PhD., is a psychologist and academic researcher affiliated with the Faculty of Psychology, University of Warsaw. Her main research interest is how persons and societies think, feel, act and learn about climate change and contemporary environmental challenges.

Moderation: Friederike Kind-Kovács
