Online-Workshop Protest-Event-Analysis in the Corona-Pandemic: Methodological Challenges and New Ideas

Mit dem Ausbruch der COVID-19-Pandemie im Frühjahr 2020 folgten tiefe Einschnitte in das öffentliche Leben und den Alltag der Menschen weltweit. Die Einschränkungen betrafen sowohl die Wirtschaft als auch die Zivilgesellschaft, einschließlich des Rechts auf öffentliche Versammlungen, die teilweise verboten wurden oder nur unter strengen Auflagen möglich waren. Zugleich lösten die verhängten Maßnahmen eine ganze Reihe von Mobilisierungen durch ein heterogenes Spektrum von Akteuren aus. Diese richteten sich nicht nur gegen die Maßnahmen an sich, sondern auch gegen ihre Auswirkungen.

Im Rahmen des Online-Workshops widmen sich Wissenschaftler:innen aus verschiedenen europäischen Forschungseinrichtungen den methodologischen Herausforderungen und neuen Ideen bei der Konzeption und Erstellung einer Protest-Ereignis-Datenbank im Kontext der sich entfaltenden Demonstrationslandschaften. Der Workshop wird die Ergebnisse des einjährigen Projekts “Akteure, Ziele und Resonanz der Proteste gegen die Corona-Maßnahmen im deutsch-polnischen Vergleich" zusammenfassen. Organisiert wird die Veranstaltung vom Institut für Philosophie und Soziologie der Polnischen Akademie der Wissenschaften (IFiS PAN) in Kooperation mit dem Hannah-Arendt-Institut für Totalitarismusforschung e.V. (HAIT). Der Workshop resultiert aus einer Kooperation des HAIT mit IFiS PAN sowie dem Institut für Protest- und Bewegungsforschung (ipb). Gefördert wird das Projekt von der Deutsch-Polnischen Wissenschaftsstiftung (DPWS).

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in the early 2020 was followed by restrictions on public life. These constraints affected both the economy and civil society, including the right to public assembly, some of which were banned entirely or were only possible under strict conditions. At the same time, the imposed regulations triggered whole series of mobilizations by different civil society actors, who protested and opposed both the restrictions themselves and their effects.

During the online workshop, scientists from various European research facilities will reflect on methodological challenges and new ideas in designing and constructing a protest event database (PEA) in the context of protest against the political management of the COVID-19 crisis. The workshop will summarize the year-long project "Akteure, Ziele und Resonanz der Proteste gegen die Corona-Maßnahmen im deutsch-polnischen Vergleich" The event will be hosted by the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IFiS PAN) in cooperation with the Hannah Arendt Institute for Totalistarism Studies (HAIT). It is the result of a cooperation between HAIT, IFiS PAN and the Institute for the Study of Protest and Social Movements (ipb). The project is funded by the German-Polish Science Foundation (DPWS/PNFN).

Po wybuchu pandemii COVID-19 na początku 2020 roku wprowadzono ograniczenia w życiu publicznym. Dotyczyły onezarówno gospodarki, jak i społeczeństwa obywatelskiego, w tym prawa do zgromadzeń publicznych, z których część została całkowicie zakazana lub była możliwa tylko w ściśle określonych warunkach. Jednocześnie, narzucone przepisy wywołały szereg mobilizacji różnych podmiotów społeczeństwa obywatelskiego, które protestowały i sprzeciwiały się zarówno samym ograniczeniom, jak i ich konekwencjom.

Podczas warsztatów online naukowcy z różnych europejskich placówek badawczych zastanowią się nad wyzwaniami metodologicznymi i nowymi pomysłami w projektowaniu i konstruowaniu bazy danych zdarzeń protestacyjnych (PEA) w kontekście protestów przeciwko politycznemu zarządzaniu kryzysem COVID-19. Warsztaty podsumują roczny projekt "Akteure, Ziele und Resonanz der Proteste gegen die Corona-Maßnahmen im deutsch-polnischen Vergleich".

Gospodarzem wydarzenia będzie Instytut Filozofii i Socjologii Polskiej Akademii Nauk (IFiS PAN) we współpracy z Instytutem Studiów nad Totalitaryzmem im. Hannah Arendt (HAIT).

Jest on wynikiem współpracy pomiędzy HAIT, IFiS PAN oraz Institute for the Study of Protest and Social Movements (ipb). Projekt jest finansowany przez Polsko-Niemiecką Fundację na rzecz Nauki (PNFN).
