Historical abuse of children in out-of-home care have become a political issue in our timethrough inquiry commissions, official apologies, and state redress. People, who as children were separated from their birth families for various reasons and placed in foster care or residential care where they suffered from abuse, have raised their voices, and claimed their rights as survivors of violence. But how do we conceptualize violence that took place in a time when children didn’t have the same status as they have today? This talk illustrates thechallenges of historizing violence by explaining how modes of historization operated throughout the Swedish redress process aimed at survivors/victims of historical child abuse.

Johanna Sköld is professor in Child Studies at Linköping University, Sweden. She has researched the history of foster care, the history of illegitimacy and how the past is dealt with in present redress politics. 2007-2011 she was secretary of the Swedish commission to inquire into abuse and neglect of children in institutions and foster homes.
