Political extremes in (and against) the tradition of constitutionalism

Anti-extremism is the quintessence of Western constitutionalism. The conceptual-historical sketch begins with the Aristotelian distinction between extreme and moderate forms of behavior and constitutions and traces their history in broad strokes. It then shows how the appreciation of party diversity and radical opposition developed in part against this tradition –to the point of a positive appreciation of extremes as drivers of progress. The age of extremes, in turn, brought a return to anti-extremism in moderate forms: no unlimited tolerance of intolerance, but measured encroachment on the liberties of the intolerant.
