PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The project conducted by Uwe Backes and Steffen Kailitz addresses the following issues:

1. In the interregional comparison with other German Länder and viewed internationally, should Saxony be regarded as a stronghold of right-wing extremism and/or right-wing populism? Closely related is the question as to the differences and similarities between ‘Saxon’ right-wing extremism and right-wing populism in interregional and international comparisons.

2. If Saxony in one or another area – election results of extreme right-wing parties, demonstrations, right-wing extremist acts of violence – does stand out in interregional and international comparisons, what are the reasons for such prominence? In 2017 the project held a panel discussion and an international and interdisciplinary conference on ‘Saxony – Stronghold of Right-Wing Extremism?’. The conference provided the basis for work on an anthology on the subject.
